Utilizing Your Study Time Prudently

by Blake Johnson

One of the hardest things newly-graduated seniors do is learn how to study effectively after they begin their career education. Facebook, Twitter, text messages, sleep, and TV are all good cures for people who would otherwise be homework enthusiasts. Whether your mind be on your stomach or on the attractive girl or guy you just flirted with, it's easy to spend an hour in front of your homework without making any considerable progress. Fortunately for you (and your homework) there are several steps you can take to make effective use of your study time.

Sleeping on the Job

Sleeping is one snare quite a few students fall into when they crack the old textbooks. To jump this hurdle, you may need a little bit of help. One of the many efficient methods of staying awake is sucking on ice while doing homework. Eating fruit and vegetables is another way of keeping yourself conscious. Munching on celery offers your mind an auxiliary task which will keep it occupied while letting you continue handling your primary task: studying.

Be sure you don't go at it too long. Taking a quick break can be extremely useful in keeping your eyes open. Take a walk outside to remind you what the sunshine feels and looks like. You can pretend that you are working on science. If you cannot leave the confines of the building, you could try sticking your face in front of an air vent. Another way of staying conscious is to run cool water onto your eyes at a drinking fountain or kitchen sink. Naturally you need to be cautious when doing this, but moistening your eyes with cold water often helps them stay open.

Reluctance in using any one of these methods often results in slumber. If you wait to use them until you are seeing daisies dancing daintily dressed up in diamonds in dreamful sleep, your homework hasn't a candle's chance in outer darkness of getting done.

Believe it or not, getting the right amount of sleep at night is one of the easiest methods of staying awake. Getting the proper amount of sleep at night can work wonders for people battling to stay awake. College is renowned for forcing college students to do assignments during the hours most non-nocturnal animals slumber. Just remember that expecting your body to remain alert throughout a long study session is not very sensible. A brief rest may go a long way toward making your day a little easier if you suffer from from insufficient sleep. Sometimes that's all you need to keep you going for a few more minutes.

Producing Productivity

Keeping your eyes open is a start, but it's only the beginning. Now you have the task of taking that hard-fought time and utilizing it prudently.

Make sure your surroundings is conducive to studying. Doing your work at a thrilling soccer game may be a poor choice. There are many different study settings you choose from. An organized table or workspace works well to keep disruptions to a minimum. A beanbag seat may be great for watching Frodo wrestle Gollum at Mount Doom, but may put you to sleep long before you are able to recite the Declaration of Independence from memory.

Twitter and Facebook are often criminals in preventing good study. If you can't have your laptop computer open without your favorite social networking site in the forefront as well, you might need to shut the thing off. Naturally, sometimes you can't do that for one reason or another. Shutting down your wifi card is a possibility you can employ if utilizing your laptop is a must. Training yourself to exercise some willpower in this area is important, no matter what. Being decided to stay productive helps but self-control is also important.

Prior to sitting down to study, have a plan for what you wish to do with that time. Tell yourself, "OK, I'm going to work on my biology homework right now." Stating your intention (whether out loud or internally) can help you stick to it. Planning out your time and effort to put your most important homework first will help you to know what to work on.

Don't forget to take appropriate rests. Once you have come to a stopping point, go ahead and take a brief break and switch gears before jumping back into your homework. If you wish to continue being productive but you get tired of focusing on the same subject, try changing to another class's work.

Regardless of what your degree is, what professional instruction you are receiving or whether you are doing it at a traditional school or online college, you will need to develop proper study methods to make your study time worthwhile.
